Everybody suffers from bad breath every now and then. However, with a few simple tips it can be easy to freshen up your breath and take care of your oral health at the same time. This article touches on some of the best ways to keep your breath fresh and clean.
1) Rinse your mouth out
If your breath is not smelling so great, mouthwash is your friend. Swishing mouthwash around in your mouth not only freshens your breath, but will also kill the germs and bacteria that caused the smell in the first place. Make sure you choose the right mouthwash, however, as some will simply cover up the issue instead of treating it.
If you do not have any mouthwash available nearby, you can also rinse your mouth with plain water. It won’t treat the issue as well as mouthwash, but it is great for a temporary fix.
2) Remember to brush and floss regularly
Bad breath problems can often be caused by a buildup of plaque on your teeth. The best way to prevent excess plaque is by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If you find that this still does not help the problem, you can try to brush and floss a little bit more frequently.
3) Avoid breath freshening mints and chew gum instead
Most of the mints that are designed to freshen your breath are also packed full of sugar. While your breath will get a temporary freshness boost, the sugar will stick to your teeth and bad breath generating bacteria will begin to form, which will only make the problem worse in the long run. Your best bet for freshness is sugarless gum, as this will help to generate saliva – which is your mouth’s natural defense against plaque and bacteria.
4) Avoid smoking and other tobacco products
Smoking or chewing tobacco is a surefire way to develop bad breath (as well as a host of other medical issues). The tobacco will damage your gums and cause bad-breath-generating bacteria to build up. For help with quitting smoking, speaking with your doctor is always a great first step.
5) Clean your tongue
The tongue is often forgotten about when it comes to oral hygiene. However, in order to keep your breath smelling fresh, it is important that you clean your tongue regularly. All you have to do is gently brush it with your regular toothbrush.
If you continue to suffer from bad breath having tried these steps, it may be time to speak with your dentist. They will be able to help you get to the bottom of your bad breath issue for good.
