Are dentists in Canada tooth or pocket-picking?

Dentistry in Canada : A brief analysis of what is going on

It would be nice to think that dentists are always looking out for our best interests, and in most cases, it’s true, but there are more than a few cases where their priorities lie elsewhere. Whether it comes in the form of outright dishonesty or pushy sales tactics, there are definitely cases when your dentist does not know best. The best thing the average person can do is arm themselves with the knowledge they need to protect their wallets, and their health, from less than honest dentists. Keep an eye out for any of the following next time you make a visit.

Upcoding and Dentistry

Just like it is always a good idea to look over your receipts after purchase, it may also be in your best interests to make sure you are getting charged the right amount after a big dental procedure. Some dentists are known to “upcode” or overcharge patients by charging them for more costly procedures or even adding on procedures that weren’t performed. It is a quick way to lose a few hundred, or thousand, dollars if you’re not careful.

Misguided procedures in Dental practices

Sometimes dentists will try and sneak in procedures that aren’t supported by the most up-to-date medical science. One example of this is the removal of amalgam fillings. The reasoning is that these fillings contain some chemicals that some consider harmful, even though the FDA thinks otherwise. Point being, stay away from dentists who practice harmful or ineffective treatments for the sole purpose of getting another customer through the door.

Relief from dental pain or bullying

It is only natural to place a bit of trust in your dentist. After all, you are paying them for their professional opinion. But in some cases it can be too easy for medical professionals to take advantage of this situation by strongly suggesting medical procedures which are ultimately not necessary. If you feel as though you have misgivings about a recommendation from your dentist, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion. While it will take a bit of extra time and energy on your part, finding a dentist you can trust will be well worth the effort.
