Keeping Your Teeth Healthy, Bright, and Strong

A bright smile is an important part of one’s personality and a healthy tooth is part of one’s well-being. If either is compromised, it can lead to unpleasant situations and eventually can lead to lower confidence and put a person in a worse condition of pain. In this article, we shall discuss how you can keep your teeth strong and healthy utilizing some healthy habits and taking some precautions. Needless to say, bad habits may result in weakened teeth. Weakened teeth may lead to bad breath, tooth decay, infected teeth and gum (gingivitis), enamel erosion, and many more conditions.

Plaque often leads to tooth decay which is a result of a weakened tooth structure. Due to complex plaque interaction, the teeth lose minerals and it leads to the development of cavities. Dental plaque is the furry substance that develops on your teeth due to the accumulation of food particles which give place for the bacteria to grow and are fueled by dietary sugar.  Enamel erosion is another reason for weakened teeth. Consumption of acidic food and drinks results in enamel erosion. If this continues it can result in significant sensitivity and discomfort.

If you want to keep your smile beautiful and teeth healthy, bright, and strong, you may consider taking the following few steps:

Oral Hygiene

If you want to keep the dental plaque at bay, you must understand how dental plaque forms and oral hygiene is the key to prevent dental plaque. After each meal, Plaque accumulates quickly. That’s why it needs to be removed regularly. Any accumulation in oral cavity creates a scope for bacterial growth. And bacterial growth damages the structure such as teeth in the oral cavity. By practicing good oral hygiene, minerals are leached from the enamel, which could eventually lead to a cavity.

Brushing your teeth twice daily is crucial for plaque prevention and flossing at least once a day is advisable to make sure there is no plaque formation.

Fluoride

According to dental experts, fluoride is arguably the most important mineral for re-strengthening your enamel. Fluoride upon being exposed to the mouth is absorbed by the enamel. It compensates for the fluoride lost during the day and also provides extended protection against further loss. Hence, brushing twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste is beneficial for your teeth.

Dietary choices

Experts often suggest that our health is affected by our choice of food. The food or drinks we consume significantly alter our dental health as well. From a tooth decay perspective, consumption of sugary products is the fundamental cause of decay. Sugary remnants from food or drinks, provide for the bacteria growing inside the dental plaque. So the more sugar you consume, the more the risks of cavity formation. When bacteria metabolize these sugars, important minerals (which give your tooth strength) are dissolved from your tooth.

Hence, your choice of food along with advice from your Dentist and Oral Hygienist is very important. That along with practicing good oral hygiene habits are crucial in keeping your teeth healthy and bright.
